According to a report (1) on patient experiences of Telehealth services published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2023, over 80% of people highlighted positive experiences, noting that their providers demonstrated attentive listening, respect, and sufficient time allocation. Additionally, another study revealed that Telehealth services are more effective compared to traditional in-person care (Snowswell et al., 2019) (2).

Yes, Medicare provides rebates for Telehealth psychology sessions with a limit of 10 rebates per year.
Telehealth is also an approved method of service delivery for DVA Gold Card Holders, NDIS recipients, and WorkCover psychology treatment, and more.
If you are eligible and wish to claim Medicare rebates, you may claim up to 10 sessions per calendar year.
If you do not have a GP letter or do not receive the Medicare rebate, we can work together to determine the appropriate and ideal number of sessions for you. This will be based on your concerns, condition, and financial circumstances.
It is not necessary to have a referral letter to see a psychologist. However, if you would like to claim Medicare rebates, then obtaining a Mental Health Treatment Plan letter from a GP is required.
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you can access the benefits of Medicare rebates, currently set at $93.35 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. These rebates can significantly reduce the cost of your sessions and provide valuable financial support.
Receiving the rebates is a straightforward process, with payments often available in your allocated account with Medicare within 1 day of the session payment. It's a convenient way to manage the expenses while focusing on your mental well-being.
Prior to your first session, you will be asked about your personal details and information along with consent outlining confidentiality and fees. If you have a GP letter, then please provide that prior to your first appointment.
In the first session, expect to feel calm and comfortable in a private environment. My priorities will be us getting to know one another, having all your questions answered, and particularly in the first session I will be focussed on understanding your current issues and concerns and your personal and medical history. This initial session will help us connect, set goals about what we will work on, and helps inform me for treatment planning to help you achieve your goals.
A typical session will last between 50-60 minutes.
The number of sessions needed with a psychologist will vary for each individual. It may vary depending on the severity and complexity of the issue. Some individuals may only require a brief intervention, whereas others may require more time. We will develop a plan together over the first two to three sessions to give you a better idea of what to expect.
For telephone sessions, a telephone handset and adequate telephone reception is all that is needed. For videocalling, devices are required to have camera, microphone, and internet access.
